I think I'm a fairly intelligent person, but I can be taken in by a scam every
blue moon. Facebook has become a breeding ground for new scams that will show you
how you will look in the future, and a newer one that will show you every person
who views your profile on Facebook.
Today I saw a couple links from people about how you can see all those persons
who go to view your profile page and it was something that I would like to know.
Now I have used those services that will show you all the people you follow or
follow you on Twitter, so I figured this was a new thing from Facebook.
I clicked the link and there was my name in the header saying I could find out
just by copying and pasting a URL in my browser to take me there. My first clue
was that the URL was a JAVA script. I have been warned by all those in the know
about computers to avoid JAVA scripts because they can do evil things to your
computer or whatever they want. Well, stupidly I followed directions and was
taken to a page that had all these blurred faces, because I wouldn't be allowed
to view the people until I unlocked the page by agreeing to take one offer from
a list they showed me. Okay, I clicked the link that allowed me to add a
background to my Facebook page. It is a legitimate thing I have seen it before,
so I went there and selected a background and then it asked me for my password
for Facebook, I didn't know it at that moment.
I use a function of my Opera browser that fills in passwords for me. I have
probably over thirty passwords for different places I go, you really think I can
remember them all? Well, I couldn't complete the task and the box covering the
page to reveal my stalkers wouldn't let me see it because I didn't complete my
task. I just shut the damn thing down, but when I got back to my Facebook page,
I found that I was sending out the damn link to all my friends. While I was
screwing around with their offer, it took my friends list and replicated the
link to send to them. I immediately went to my account and changed my password,
after hunting for the stupid thing to enter the correct one. But too late, it
sent out the thing to all of them and Facebook doesn't give you any way to
delete sent messages.
Okay, here's my thoughts, Facebook must get a kickback for all the offers
completed. The thing was fairly legit, but uses our desire to find out who is
watching us, by making us select a few offers that we really don't need, but
they must have to pay Facebook a bounty for everyone who takes the bait.
Facebook isn't all that free if we fall for this crap, if it looks too good to
be real, just don't do it. Or send a personal message to the person who sent
the link asking if they did send it.
I watched a TV special about Facebook and Mark Z has hundreds of people
working for him all sitting around dreaming up hacks, you'd think they could
track down and stop these things. But why stop the cash flow?
